The 19th Street Theatre presents The Young Victoria staring Emily Blunt, Rupert Friend, Paul Bettany, Miranda Richardson, Jim Broadbent - directed by Jean-Marc Vallée. Nominated - Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama - Emily Blunt) - 2010 Golden Globes. It is 1837 and 17-year old Victoria is at the center of an English royal power struggle. She is in line for the throne, but is being kept from the court by her overbearing mother. Victoria's handsome cousin Albert comes to visit, and it becomes quickly obvious that he's been coached to win her hand. February 6th - Simon Boccanegra – Simon Boccanegra is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play Simón Bocanegra (1843) by Antonio García Gutiérrez. Verdi's gripping political thriller, which is written for a baritone. It at La Scala, Milan on 24 March 1881. Approximate running time 3 hours 40 minutes / 2 intermissions. February 7th - The Moravian String Quartet will perform The Brahms & Schumann Connection at the Moravian College Music Institute, Peter Hall. The Moravian String Quartet features Linda Louise Kistler, violin, Inna Eyzerovich, violin, Simon Maurer, viola, & David Moulton, cello, will be joined by Kristin Ditlow on piano for the Brahms Piano Quintet. This is the first time in eight years that the choir will be performing in Philadelphia, and The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia is partnering with St. Olaf tomake this concert a success. February 13 & 14th The Allentown Symphony will present Romeo & Juliet this concert will feature Diane Wittry conducting and Sarah Lane & Luis Ribagorda from the American Ballet Theatre Company. February 21st - Vienna Piano TrioThe Chamber Music Society of Bethlehem is pleased to present the Vienna Piano Trio. March 4th - Mozart's Le Nozze Di Figaro (Marriage of Figaro) is a continuation of the story line of Rossini's The Barber of Seville. At the end of Barber, Rosina and Count Almaviva are wed. In Marriage of Figaro, their relationship has fallen apart. The Count is unfaithful and Rosina has a secret lover of her own. Figaro and Susanna, Rosina's pretty maid, want to marry but they need permission from the Count who would like Susanna for himself. Figaro and Susanna trick the Count into seeing the error of his ways and the opera ends happily.  The opera is being staged at the F.M. March 13th and 14th; The Allentown Symphony will present the Sibelius Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. The concert will consist of the following selections. Lamentoso (World Premiere) Wittry, Concerto for Violin, Op. 47, d minor, Sibelius,Violin Soloist - SoJin Kim, 2009 Schadt Winner, Symphony No. 3, Op. 56, a minor Mendelssohn. As we create a work of art or recreate it, each of us trys to capture emotions and impressions in music. Driven by a sense of inspiration and passion for what we do, see that passion culminate in a concert featuring a world premiere by Music Director Diane Wittry, a vivid solo performance by the 2009 Schadt String Competition winner, SoJin Kim, and Mendelssohn's musical impressions of the landscape of Scotland. March 31th - The Williams Center for the Arts presents the Brentano String Quartet - Critics and audiences alike are enthralled by the Brentano String Quartet.

April 9th - Award-winning saxophonist, David Liebman, joins the Lehigh Valley Jazz Repertory and Lehigh students to play works by Shorter, Pastorius and Zawinul. The concert will be held on Friday, April 9th at Lehigh University's Baker Hall at 8 pm For more information: 610-758-2787.

  Youth Media Calendar    

February 6th - Test Prep is holding a 12-session SAT preparation class beginning February 6 at Lehigh University's Maginnes Hall on Packer Avenue and Vine Street, Bethlehem. Participants must meet household income guidelines. For more information, Mark Atkinson at 610-997-7971.

February 9th.- Will Halpin is the least popular guy at Coaler High who just so happens to befriend the only guy less popular than him. When a murder occurs at the school its up to this unusual duo to solve the crime and maybe get the girl.  The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin by Josh Berk comes out February 9th. If you enjoy strange heroes and a good helping of wise guy, you will love this geeks-rule debut. Book signings and author talks will be held at the Bethlehem public library Feb. 17 7-9 PM and at the Allentown Library Feb. 187-9 PM.

February 13th - The Mock Turtle Marionettes' will be starting shows every Saturday as part of their new Saturday's Child Family Series. On February 13th there's a Valentine's Day Party with Storytellers and the Lehigh Valley Folk music society. Shows will continue through April. (Feb. 20th- Cliff Sunflower- Honey Bees; March 6th - Book Beast and Puppet (Mock Turtle);  Pooch- Touchstone; April 10th - Tinker Tailor- Mock Turtle.) The shows are at 10 Am at the Icehouse on Sand Island in Bethlehem. There will be a performing arts workshop following each performance. There is a small fee for admission. Once Upon a Mattress, a musical comedy, is a humorous adaptation of The Princess and The Pea. This February, both Blair Academy and Moravian Academy will perform this enduringly popular tale. Blair Academy will host the show at 7:30 PM Feb. 18, 19, and 20. Moravian Academys show will run at 7:30 PM Feb. 26, 27, and at 2 PM Feb. 28.

March 21st - Fear of monsters, dealing with siblings, the first day of school and innocent crushes? Theatreworks USA presents a musical version of Junie B. Jones based on Barbara Park's popular and funny chapter book, the musical features the comical aspects of childhood. The show is a part of Kutztown University's Performing Artists Children's series. KidTunes is a music series designed to introduce children to diverse musical genres like rock, jazz, world, and folk. The concert series features talented children's performers from throughout the Northeast. Hosted by ArtsQuest, this series will run the second Saturday of every month at 10 AM at the Banana Factory, Bethlehem. The lineup includes the Cat's Pajamas on Feb. 13, Suzi Shelton March 13, classic rockers StarFish April 10, former Meat loaf guitarist Mr:Ray May 8, and rockers Dogs On Fleas June 12.

Jazz in the Valley is asking all artists to submit poster designs for the 1st Annual Jazz in the Valley Festival. The requirements for the poster are it needs to be vertical, the size of the artwork must be 24x18, and the artwork can be in any media. The deadline for all entries is March 30th 2010. The Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink located on Illick's Mill Road is open for ice skating Sunday-Thursday from 1-5 pm and Friday and Saturday from 1-5 and 7-10 pm. Season passes are also available.
