During the Reporting Period, three full time positions were filled. The information required by FCC Rule 73.2080(c)(6) is provided in the charts that follow.
Initiatives:
Maintained an internship program designed to assist members of the community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment. WDIY College Internship Program gives students real career experience in broadcasting. All students receive college credit or high school community service credit for their work, which averages about 80 hours per semester in the Programming and Operations area of the station. We had two interns from Kutztown University during this reporting period.
The Internship and Youth Media Programs are training programs that have enabled WDIY personnel to expand training opportunities for local youth. Participated in events or programs sponsored by educational institutions relating to career opportunities in broadcasting. Example: Lehigh Carbon Community College workshop: What is Indecency? Neil Hever, Operations Director, conducted the session (Fall 2007). The Youth Media Program teaches high school students about radio broadcasting.
Conducted EEO staff training on March 11, 2008. Included dissemination of company policy and background information provided by legal counsel. The session included the review of the organizations' anti-discrimination policy and FCC mandates. Eight staff members were present for the training conducted by the executive director.
Dennise M. Kowalczyk - Executive Director - conducted presentations to the following organizations about WDIY 88.1 FM opportunities:
Allentown Rotary Club (November 14, 2007), Liberty Bell Rotary Club (November 28, 2007), Hi Neighbors Retirement Community (November 2007) and Cedar Crest College (November 2007) and Bethlehem Rotary Club (January 16, 2008)
Distributed employment opportunity information at the following partnership events in the month of June.: PA Sinfonia, Magnetos Car Show, Circle of Stones Children Theatre, Kutztown Folk Festival.

Initiatives: The employment unit engaged in the following broad outreach initiatives in accordance with various elements of FCC Rule 73.2080(c)(2):
Participated in job fairs by station personnel who have substantial responsibility in making hiring decisions. WDIY General Manager and Development Director participated in the NABEF Career Fair at
the 2005 NAB Radio Conference on September 21, 2005 in Philadelphia.
Established an internship program designed to assist members of the
community to acquire skills needed for broadcast employment.
WDIY College Internship Program gives students real career experience in broadcasting. All students receive college credit or high school
community service credit for their work, which averages about 80 hours per semester in the Programming and Operations area of the station.

Currently one student comes from Northampton Community College and one from Liberty High School. Fall 2005 saw one student from Moravian College and another from Northampton Community College. During Summer 2005, one came from Mount Holyoke College. Additionally WDIY operates a Youth Media Program to train high school youth in radio production and broadcasting. In 2006, fourteen students participated in the program. Of the
fourteen, one is from Bethlehem Catholic, three from Freedom High School, two from Liberty High School, and one each from Gateway High School, Emmaus High School, Harrison Morton Middle School, Brandywine Heights Middle School, Southern Lehigh High School, Dieruff High School, Parkland High School and Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing
Arts. The students each spent an average 40 hours in the program, in the WDIY News Department, producing news and public affairs features which were broadcast. Established training programs designed to enable station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify them for higher level positions. The Internship and Youth Media Programs are training programs that have enabled WDIY personnel to move on to higher level job positions at WDIY, WYPR Baltimore and Kutztown University Radio. Participated in events or programs sponsored by educational institutions relating to career opportunities in broadcasting.

DeSalles University-Career lecture cosponsored by Southside Film Institute, March 2006 (Program Director); Northampton College-Digital editing class presentation November 2005 (Program Director); Southside Film Institute-Technical lecture and documentary guidance June 2005 (Program Director);
Lehigh University-Political Science local reporting workshop, May 2005 (News Director).

Listed each upper-level category opening in a job bank or newsletter of media trade groups whose membership includes substantial participation of
women and minorities. Listed Development Director position vacancy
announcement in the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Job bank online at cpb.org. Provided training to management level personnel on methods of ensuring equal employment opportunity and prevent discrimination. General Manager attended Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters annual meeting May 23, 2005 and participated in a special meeting on EEO and 2006 license renewal.

History 

1981

Two radio enthusiasts, Cheryl Haughney and Neil Hever, propose to Muhlenberg College that a community staff be formed to operate WMUH, the College-owned station, during times that students are on breaks or vacations. Muhlenberg College agrees and the Lehigh Valley Community Broadcasters Association (LVCBA) is born.
August 1984
The LVCBA incorporates in hopes of one day creating a community public radio station.
October 19, 1989
LVCBA submits construction permit application to the FCC.
September 1990
FCC approves engineering study.
June 1993
FCC application approval granted.
August 1993
Construction permit issued.
September 1993
WDIY (Do It Yourself public radio) receives its name from contest winner Jim Ferrani, after the Coast Guard vessel GOOD TIDINGS relinquishes its call letters at the LVCBA's request.
September 1993
U. S. Commerce Department announces an award of $127,000 for the purchase of initial broadcast equipment. Local match for the grant provided by Lehigh and Northampton Counties, the cities of Allentown and Bethlehem, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania through a Legislative Initiative Grant sponsored by Senator Roy Afflerbach.
October 1993
WDIY hires its first employee, Ira Faro, as Development Director.
February 1994
National Public Radio satellite study indicates the CoreStates Bank Building (the former Lehigh Valley Bank) in South Bethlehem as primary site for WDIY studios
July 1994
Mark Maben is announced as WDIY's first Station Manager.
October 1994
WDIY hires Christine Dempsey as Program Director and announces initial program schedule.
October 3, 1994
Construction of WDIY's studios and office space begins.
October 20, 1994
Five years and one day after the initial FCC application, the first WDIY test signal goes out over the airwaves at 88.1 FM.
November 1994
Volunteers begin installation of studio equipment under the direction of consulting engineer Charles Loughery and WDIY Engineering Director Pat Shea.
December 1994
Major equipment installation completed and training of volunteer on-air programmers begins.
December 21, 1994
FCC grants WDIY permission to begin formal broadcasting in January.
December 29, 1994
National Public Radio's Board of Directors votes to approve WDIY's NPR membership application.
December 31, 1994
WDIY announces Sunday, January 8, 1995, as on-air date with regular broadcast schedule to commence the following day.
January 2, 1995
Station volunteer programmers begin a week of dress rehearsal training.
January 8, 1995
WDIY signs on-air. The wait is over. The Lehigh Valley's first and only listener supported, community owned and operated public radio station signs on air.
